Hello, I have problems pairing my Apple bluetooth keyboard with Windows 7. It is recognized by the bluetooth search but when I click next it takes a while and then the bluetooth assistant reports a timeout. This wasn't an issue under Vista.

There it worked out of the box: The assistant provided a code, I typed it on the keyboard and the paring was set up without a problem. So I assume the problem is Windows 7 and not the keyboard. And I noticed another strange thing.
When I press the enter button while the assistant is trying to pair the keyboard, the assistant don't report a timeout but asks for a code provided by the keyboard. But of cause there is no code with the keyboard because it should work the other way around.
I've already read about this problem on an Apple forum. There seems to be a solution for the newer keyboards. They suggest to select the keyboard service under the device properties and bluetooth services.
But this seems to work only for the new keyboards not for the older white ones like mine. There it is no service listed at all under bluetooth services. Hi, Thank you for your post.
When you are asked for a code provided by the keyboard, please try the verification code which comes with the keyboard and see if it works. Meanwhile, if you have another Bluetooth device, please check if it can pair with the computer.
Considering the issue is related to the specific device, it is also recommended that you contact for help. Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. Thanks for your posting, it was enough of a hint to help me pair mine with a clean install of Windows 7. When the assistant is trying to pair and pressing enter is making it error instead input a code of your own on the numberpad and press enter. Then provide this same code to the setup assistant via another keyboard and it should eventually pair.
It took me a couple of tries but it worked in the end so don't give up. Start assistant searching 2. Double click detected keyboard 3. Type a code on the keypad 4. Click Enter a manufacturer provided code (or whatever the wording is). Type in the same code you just typed on the keypad. Cross your fingers!
Hope this helps Regards, BDC. Thanks for the reply. I have figured out the solution some days ago by myself, but wasn’t able to post due to lack of time. Maybe some additional hints for people with the same problem: The way described above is definitely working, but timing is critical. So don’t give up, you will most certainly need more than one try! Start with using only one character as code and repeat the sequence code - enter - code - enter. By my experience there is no harm if the keyboard registered the desired code and you repeat it, but it is a problem if you miss the right moment between code acceptance and timeout.
And hoping that one or more MS-Tech guy is reading this: This problem must definitely be a Windows 7 issue and not a device issue. The problem didn’t occur under XP or Vista. Pairing always worked there without any problem. So there must have been a change in the pairing process introduced in 7 (besides the obvious optical changes). I used to have the same problem pairing my microsoft x821504 numeric keypad with my laptop under windows 7. I tried all of the above without any success. I remembered when I purchased the unit I used the following procedure to make the keypad in pairing mode.
I tried it and it worked immediately! 1- Make sure you have a fresh AAA battery in the unit. 2- Power it up using the switch under the keypad. 3- Press and hold the bluetooth button (next to the power switch) for 3 to 5 seconds untill the battery led flashes red/green.
Your keypad is now in pairing mode. 4- Go to your bluetooth software (start menu/devices & printers/add new device) and you should have no problem pairing the unit to your computer.
